Cheltenham Festival Day 1 Recap: Strong Start with Key Winners as the Festival Delivers Early Drama

Share

Cheltenham Festival rarely starts quietly. Day 1 delivered exactly what makes the meeting so special, with strong favourites justifying confidence, surprise results shaking markets, and insider signals landing exactly when it mattered. For RH Sports Analysis members, the opening day produced a strong set of results across several races, beginning with the highly anticipated Festival opener.

Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle: Old Park Star Delivers (15/8)

The Cheltenham Festival always begins with the Supreme Novices' Hurdle, a race known for its chaotic pace and large fields. This year, Old Park Star justified the confidence placed in him before the race. Trained by Nicky Henderson and ridden by Nico de Boinville, he showed composure throughout a contest that often punishes inexperienced runners who struggle with the early Festival tempo. Old Park Star edged past Sober Glory and Mydaddypaddy to complete a British 1-2-3, setting the tone perfectly for the day ahead.

Singer Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices' Chase: Kargese Shakes the Market (11/2)

The second major moment of the day came when Kargese landed the Grade 1 Arkle at 11/2, producing one of the early surprises of the meeting. The Willie Mullins trained mare made virtually all the running under Danny Mullins, jumping superbly from the front before holding on strongly up the famous Cheltenham hill. With heavy market support behind Lulamba and stablemate Kopek Des Bordes, the attention was elsewhere, but Kargese capitalised on mistakes from both rivals at the business end to win by two and a quarter lengths. At 11/2, it represented one of the standout prices of the day and highlighted once again why identifying runners who can handle Cheltenham's demanding track is so important.

Unibet Champion Hurdle: Lossiemouth Lands Through the Insider Chat (6/4)

The day's strongest signal came through the RH Sports Analysis Insider Info Chat. Lossiemouth at 6/4 in the Champion Hurdle delivered exactly as expected. Paul Townend's mount was electric from the start, travelling with authority and class throughout before pulling clear in the closing stages to win by over six lengths. Willie Mullins had made the bold decision to bypass a third consecutive Mares' Hurdle in favour of the Champion, and it paid off emphatically. The victory marked Lossiemouth's fourth consecutive Cheltenham Festival success, confirming her as one of the most impressive mares the division has seen in years. When strong analysis and insider confidence align, the results speak for themselves.

Sun Racing Festival Plate Handicap Chase: Madara Finishes the Job (4/1)

The day's ITV coverage concluded with another strong result as Madara landed the Festival Plate at 4/1. Cheltenham handicaps are notoriously difficult to solve, but Dan Skelton's charge made it look straightforward under brother Harry, dominating from some way out and eventually winning by seven and a half lengths from Will The Wise. At 4/1, it represented another solid value result to round off an impressive opening day.

Day 1 Summary

Day 1 delivered exactly what Cheltenham is known for. A strong opener winner at 15/8, a market upset at 11/2, insider confidence landing at 6/4 in the feature Champion Hurdle, and handicap value finding the right runner at 4/1. From the Supreme to the Arkle to the Champion Hurdle to the Festival Plate, the range of results reflected a day where preparation, race reading and stable signals aligned across the full card.

Looking Ahead to Day 2

If Day 1 proved anything, it is that this year's Cheltenham Festival is going to be competitive across every race. Day 2 brings another set of high profile contests, including the Queen Mother Champion Chase, one of the fastest and most intense races of the week. Markets will continue to shift as trainers confirm targets and ground conditions evolve, and as always at Cheltenham, the biggest opportunities often appear when the market moves faster than the true probabilities. Day 1 delivered across the board, and now attention turns to Day 2 with momentum firmly on the right side.
