Newcastle vs Man City Preview: Fifth Meeting, Ramsey Suspension & Title Race Implications

Share

Newcastle United and Manchester City meet for the fifth time this season when they face off at St James' Park on Saturday evening in the FA Cup fifth round. City have already eliminated the Magpies from the EFL Cup this season, winning both semi-final legs for a 5-1 aggregate victory, and also beat them 2-1 in the Premier League at the Etihad in February. Newcastle's only victory came in November, when Harvey Barnes scored both goals in a 2-1 Premier League win on this ground. Eddie Howe's side arrive on a high after a dramatic 2-1 win over Manchester United on Wednesday, where William Osula's stunning 90th-minute strike sealed three points despite playing the entire second half with ten men following Jacob Ramsey's controversial dismissal. City, meanwhile, dropped two crucial points in the title race by drawing 2-2 with Nottingham Forest at the Etihad, leaving them seven points behind Arsenal with a game in hand. Kick-off is at 8pm GMT, live on TNT Sports 1 and discovery+.

Newcastle's Form: Ten-Man Heroics and European Promise

Wednesday night's victory over Manchester United was the kind of performance that defines a season at St James' Park. After Ramsey was sent off for a second bookable offence in first-half stoppage time, having been judged to have dived while attempting to round goalkeeper Senne Lammens, Newcastle somehow found a way to win. Anthony Gordon put the home side ahead from the penalty spot in the sixth minute of added time after being fouled by Bruno Fernandes, only for Casemiro to head home an equaliser from Fernandes' free kick three minutes later. But the ten men were not done, and substitute Osula's superb curling effort in the 90th minute, weaving past Tyrell Malacia and bending the ball around Harry Maguire and Lammens, brought the house down and inflicted Michael Carrick's first defeat as Manchester United head coach.

The inconsistency, however, has been maddening. Thrashing Qarabag 6-1 in the Champions League playoff first leg, beating Spurs 2-1 away and dismantling Villa 3-1 in the FA Cup fourth round with a Sandro Tonali brace showcase a squad capable of competing at the highest level. But consecutive Premier League defeats to Manchester City and Everton, the latter a particularly painful 2-3 reverse, highlight the defensive fragility that has plagued Newcastle all season. The Magpies have ended a run of three consecutive home Premier League defeats with the Man United result, but their defensive record remains a concern that will give City considerable encouragement heading to Tyneside.

Man City's Form: Title Chase Takes a Hit

Wednesday night was a setback for Pep Guardiola's title aspirations. Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw at home by relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, a result that left them seven points behind Arsenal with a game in hand. Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring with a volleyed finish from Rayan Cherki's cross, and Rodri restored the lead with a header just after the hour mark, but Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson each equalised for the visitors. Bernardo Silva blamed refereeing decisions in the aftermath, but the reality is that Guardiola's side were unable to shut the door despite creating more than enough chances. Before the Forest draw, City had been in strong form, winning four of their previous five matches including a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, a comfortable 3-0 home win over Fulham, and a 1-0 win at Leeds courtesy of a Semenyo goal.

City's FA Cup campaign has been comfortable so far. They smashed Exeter City 10-1 in the third round before beating League Two Salford City 2-0 in the fourth round. Guardiola's record at this stage of the competition is extraordinary, with City having won their last 23 games in the third, fourth and fifth rounds since losing 1-0 to Wigan in the 2017-18 fifth round. The Champions League last 16 first leg at Real Madrid on Wednesday night adds another layer of complexity to Guardiola's squad management, and some rotation is expected, though the depth of the squad means any changes should not significantly weaken the side.

Injury Crisis Meets Squad Depth

Newcastle have significant injury concerns and a key suspension heading into this tie. Jacob Ramsey was sent off against Manchester United and will serve a one-match ban, removing one of Howe's most reliable midfield options. Captain Bruno Guimarães remains out with a hamstring injury until April and is arguably the biggest miss in the squad, while Tino Livramento (hamstring), Fabian Schär (ankle) and Emil Krafth (knee) are all sidelined. Lewis Miley is also out with a knee injury. The good news is that Joelinton started against Man United and looked sharp on his return from a six-game absence with a groin problem, and Sven Botman is available after recovering from a back issue, having come on as a late substitute on Wednesday. Nick Pope could come in for Aaron Ramsdale in goal, with Howe likely to field his strongest available side given the importance of a potential quarter-final berth.

Manchester City will be without Joško Gvardiol (tibial fracture) and Mateo Kovačić (long-term ankle issue). Nico O'Reilly is also a doubt after picking up an ankle knock against Leeds and missing the Forest game. The fitness of Erling Haaland is the main talking point; the Norwegian missed the Leeds match with a training ground knock but returned to start against Forest, where he was closely marked throughout and unable to find the net. With Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday, Guardiola may opt to rest Haaland and deploy Omar Marmoush up front instead. Jérémy Doku and Savinho have both returned from their respective injury spells and were on the bench against Forest, giving Guardiola welcome attacking depth. The likely lineup features Donnarumma in goal, with Aït-Nouri, Guéhi, Dias and Nunes across the back four, Rodri and Bernardo Silva in midfield, Reijnders providing the box-to-box running, and Semenyo, Cherki and either Haaland or Marmoush in attack.

Head-to-Head: A Season-Long Rivalry

This is the eleventh FA Cup tie between Newcastle and Manchester City. The Citizens have progressed from the last two, both at the quarter-final stage in 2019-20 and 2023-24, but Newcastle hold the historical advantage, having progressed from six of the first eight encounters. Two of those victories came specifically in the fifth round, in 1994-95 and 2001-02. Newcastle have progressed from nine of their last ten FA Cup fifth-round ties, although they were beaten 2-1 by Brighton at this stage last season following Danny Welbeck's extra-time winner.

City have already eliminated Newcastle from the EFL Cup semi-finals this season with a dominant 5-1 aggregate victory, winning 2-0 at St James' Park in the first leg before a 3-1 victory at the Etihad where Marmoush scored twice and Reijnders also found the net. Only Wimbledon in 1987-88 and Arsenal in 2007-08 have previously eliminated the same club from both the League Cup and FA Cup in the same season, and both of those instances also involved Newcastle as the defeated club. In the Premier League this term, Newcastle won 2-1 at St James' Park in November courtesy of Harvey Barnes' brace, before City won 2-1 at the Etihad in February through a Nico O'Reilly double.

Tactical Breakdown

Newcastle's approach will be shaped by their personnel limitations. Without Guimarães and Ramsey, the midfield lacks its usual creativity and composure, which may force Howe to adopt a more pragmatic setup. A 4-3-3 with Tonali as the deepest midfielder, flanked by Joelinton and Joe Willock, would provide industry and pressing intensity if not the technical quality that Guimarães offers. The key will be Gordon and Barnes in wide areas, where their pace and directness can exploit the space behind City's full-backs on the counter. Barnes scored both goals in Newcastle's 2-1 league win over City at St James' Park in November, making him the obvious dangerman, while Gordon has been Newcastle's outstanding performer all season with goals in the Champions League, the Premier League and from the penalty spot against Man United on Wednesday.

City's tactical approach rarely changes regardless of the opponent. Guardiola's side will look to dominate possession, build patiently from the back and use the technical superiority of their midfield to control the tempo. Rodri will sit deepest, having scored in the Forest draw and continued to demonstrate his importance since returning from his ACL injury. The question is in attack, where Haaland's involvement will depend on how Guardiola balances this fixture against Real Madrid three days later. If Haaland is rested, Marmoush could lead the line alongside Semenyo, who has five goals in eight Premier League appearances since joining from Bournemouth. City's dominant FA Cup pedigree in recent seasons is well documented, but Newcastle's home record against City suggests this will not be straightforward.

Key Battles

  • Anthony Gordon vs Matheus Nunes: Gordon has been Newcastle's outstanding player this season, converting the penalty against Man United, netting four goals in the Champions League playoff against Qarabag, and providing a consistent threat from the left flank. Nunes, deployed at right-back since Kyle Walker's departure, will have his hands full containing one of the most in-form attackers in English football.
  • Harvey Barnes vs Rayan Aït-Nouri: Barnes scored both goals when Newcastle beat City 2-1 in November and is a proven performer in FA Cup ties at St James' Park. Aït-Nouri's offensive instincts could leave space behind him that Barnes will look to exploit on the counter-attack.
  • Sandro Tonali vs Rodri: A battle between two of the best midfielders in the game. Tonali scored a brace in Newcastle's fourth-round win over Villa and has been superb since his return from suspension. Rodri remains the metronome of everything City do, heading home against Forest on Wednesday to demonstrate his threat from set pieces.
  • Malick Thiaw vs Omar Marmoush: If Haaland is rested, Marmoush will likely lead the line. The Egyptian scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 home win over Newcastle in the Premier League last season and added two more in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg at the Etihad in February. Thiaw has been a solid addition since his summer move from AC Milan but the defensive task against City's attackers is the sternest test in football.

What's at Stake

Newcastle sit 12th in the Premier League on 39 points following the Man United result, a disappointing position for a club that finished fifth last season and is competing in the Champions League knockout stages. The FA Cup represents Howe's most realistic chance of domestic silverware, having already been eliminated from the EFL Cup by the same opponents. A quarter-final place would give the Magpies a realistic path to Wembley, and the emotional boost of beating City would be enormous. The brutal fixture schedule, with a two-legged Champions League tie against Barcelona sandwiching a league trip to Chelsea, means Howe must pick his battles, but the FA Cup offers tangible reward.

For City, the FA Cup is one of four trophies still in play as Guardiola pursues what would be a remarkable quadruple. Seven points behind Arsenal with a game in hand, City's title hopes are alive but the margin for error is thin, and the Champions League tie against Real Madrid promises to be one of the matches of the round. The depth of City's squad allows rotation without a significant drop in quality, which gives Guardiola flexibility that few managers can match. Having won all 23 of their FA Cup third, fourth and fifth round ties since 2018, City will not want to relinquish their grip on the competition.

Referee Watch: Sam Barrott

Sam Barrott has been appointed as referee, with John Brooks on VAR duty and Gary Beswick as assistant VAR. Barrott took charge of the Premier League fixture between these two sides at St James' Park in November, the game Newcastle won 2-1 through Barnes' double, so both clubs will be familiar with his style. The presence of the experienced Brooks on VAR should provide a safety net for what promises to be an intense encounter. Given the history between these two sides this season, with four previous meetings already producing no shortage of drama, Barrott will need to establish his authority early and manage the emotions of both sets of players carefully.

The Bottom Line

This is the standout tie of the fifth round, pitting two of the most ambitious clubs in English football against each other at one of the most atmospheric stadiums in the country. Newcastle's injury crisis and Ramsey's suspension make life difficult for Howe, but the Man United victory demonstrated that this squad has the fight and quality to compete with anyone when the occasion demands it. City's extraordinary record at this stage and their superior squad depth makes them favourites, but Barnes' pedigree against this particular opponent, Gordon's electric form and the cauldron of St James' Park under the lights ensure this will be no formality.

History tells us Newcastle tend to perform in the fifth round, with nine progressions from their last ten ties at this stage, and the Magpies will be determined to prevent City from completing a domestic cup double over them this season. Everything is set for a blockbuster Saturday night.
