Opening Weekend 2026/27: Four Reads, and What's New at RH

Five weeks on from the World Cup final, the league season is back, and it arrived with a different shape to it. Arsenal are defending a title for the first time in 22 years, three promoted clubs are in the division, one of them after a 25-year absence, and two of those three won on day one. The opening round produced four selections worth walking through, from Erzurum on Friday night to the Knavesmire on Saturday afternoon.
This is also the first post of a new season for RH, so the back end of it covers what has changed since the summer: Counta V5, the pricing rework, and a free game with £100 on the table every month.
Osimhen and a promoted defence that could not cope
Erzurumspor FK
Erzurumspor are back in the Süper Lig after five seasons away, and their second fixture of the campaign brought the champions to town. Galatasaray had drawn their opener, which put a little edge on the price of everything attached to them, and Victor Osimhen had scored twice in that game, which said more about where he was than where they were.
The selection was Osimhen to score two or more at 15/4. Won @ 15/4 The logic was not complicated: a striker who had just opened the season with a brace, against a newly promoted side conceding early and often, in a game Galatasaray were expected to control from the first minute. Roland Sallai and Yunus Akgün had it 2-0 inside twenty minutes, Osimhen added the third on the stroke of half time and the fourth with ten minutes left, and the second goal landed with the game already settled, which is exactly when a dominant side keeps feeding its striker rather than managing the scoreline. Four league goals in two games, 63 for the club in total, and Erzurumspor still without a point.
Tzolis, van Ewijk, and a matchup that was always going to be busy
Arsenal
The champions opened at home to a Coventry side playing their first Premier League game in 25 years, and the result itself was never the interesting market. Kai Havertz scored inside fifteen minutes, Bukayo Saka doubled it midway through the half, Martin Ødegaard added a third four minutes after the restart, and Coventry became the first team on record to go through a first half of a Premier League game without a touch in the opposition box or a single tackle.
The interesting market was the left flank. Christos Tzolis was making his first league start since his £34 million move from Club Brugge, where he had been Belgian Pro League Player of the Season two years running and finished with 43 goals and 45 assists in 108 appearances. A winger with that output, in a side that was going to live in the opposition half, running at a right-back in Milan van Ewijk who was going to spend ninety minutes defending on his own. The bet builder at 11/4 paired van Ewijk for two or more fouls committed with Tzolis for two or more fouls won, two sides of the same matchup. Won @ 11/4 Both legs were complete by the hour mark. The second selection, Tzolis for over 1.5 shots on target at 5/2, was the attacking version of the same read, and it was done by the 66th minute. Won @ 5/2
Hull, set pieces, and the 15/2 that carried a five-fold
Hull City
Hull were back in the top flight after nine years and drew Manchester United at home in the Saturday lunchtime slot. The price on a home win sat at 15/2, which is the market pricing a promoted side against a club that had spent the summer rebuilding under Michael Carrick, and it was the leg that mattered in a five-fold priced at 58/1.
The read on Hull was about what promotion momentum does in an opening fixture. A side that had come up on spirit and organisation, at a packed MKM Stadium, against opponents who were still working out what they were. It played out almost to the letter: Semi Ajayi turned in a loose ball in the box on 17 minutes, Mendy headed in from a Slater free-kick on 38, two centre-backs scoring from two set pieces, and United never looked like getting back into it. With Hull 1-0 up and the selection frozen at 15/2, the five-fold was cashed out at £54.53. Won @ 15/2 Hull's first Premier League win over United, on their first day back.
Infraad and a Melrose that went to the horse it should have
The Melrose is the three-year-old staying handicap of the Ebor meeting, a race that tends to reward the improving horse with a trainer who has aimed at it, and William Haggas had Infraad set for it off a mark of 97 with Tom Marquand booked.
The 11/4 was taken before the market settled, and Infraad went off the 10/3 favourite in a field of seventeen. Won @ 11/4 Marquand chased the leaders, moved into second three furlongs out, led over two out and stayed on strongly up the straight, holding Galilean Quality at 12/1 with Who's Lope third at 28/1. A £10 stake returned £37.50 on a race that was never in much doubt from the two-furlong pole.

Next weekend brings the two promoted sides together at Coventry on Saturday, United host Ipswich on Sunday with questions to answer, and Arsenal go to Villa Park on Monday night for Ezri Konsa's return to his old club.
